The pump is quiet and is operated solely by the energy in a flow of water entering from above the pump. It uses no external source of power such as electricity, petrol or diesel.

For example, if water from a stream or spring goes into the pump from a height of 2 metres above the pump, some of the inlet water can be pumped to a height of 50 metres or more while the remainder continues downhill. Adjustment for varying inlet water conditions is provided by alternative adjustment tubes.
